Abstract
Introduction: - Musculoskeletal disorder is the most common reason for consulting a
physicians and constitute, in most countries, up to 10–20% of primary care
consultations and cause of absenteeism from work due to MSD. Even though the level
of health care utilization ranges from 23 to 73 % in developing countries still it is critical
in developing countries for MSD and plenty of study on prevalence of MSD but limited
information on level of health care utilization and factors affect it in Ethiopia.
Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of musculoskeletal
disorder, health care utilization and associated factors for musculoskeletal disorder
among garment workers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2020.
Methods: Factory based cross-sectional study was conducted from March to April
2020. A total 601 were selected by simple random sampling technique from the
garments in Addis Ababa city. Interviewer administered questions was used to collect
data. Standardized Nordic questionnaire used to assess MSD and health care
utilization tools was developed from different literatures. Data were entered, coded and
sorted into the Epi info version 7 software and exported to SPSS version 20 for analysis.
Bivariate and multivariate analysis was used to identify factor associated with health
care utilization for MSD among garment workers. Variables with a p value <0.2 were
taken to in multivariate logistic regression and the significant association determined at
p value<0.05
Results: A total of 601 garment workers were included in this study with response rate
of 546 (90.8%), 425(77.8%) were females. Mean age was 27.75(SD±5.9). The finding
showed that 491 (89.9%) of participants had musculoskeletal disorder in last 12
months. Among this (50.9%):95%CI:(46.6-55.4) of participants visited health institution.
A Sex [AOR: 1.66; 95% CI (1.301-2.97)], age [AOR: 4.221; 95% CI (1.239-14.38)]
marital status [AOR: 2.38; 95% CI (0.86-6.59)], perceived severity [AOR: 2.419; 95%
CI (1.523-3.843)], perceived disability [AOR: 7.569; 95% CI (4.384-13.079)] and
monthly salary [AOR: 1.68; 95% CI (1.361-2.086)] were associated with health care
utilization for MSDs.
