Abstract
Postoperative prolonged hospital stay (PHS) is defined as the time from the date of the
operation to the date of discharge, transfer to a sub-acute service, or death, whichever
came first. Hospital length of stay (LOS) after major surgery is not only a discrete and
objective measure of surgical outcome; its decrease is a means to reduce the cost of
hospital care for patients .Prolonged length of stay (LOS) not only increases cost, but is
also associated with increased rates of complications . The objective of this research is
to assess the prevalence & identify the causes of delayed hospital stay after major
surgeries in University of Gondar Hospital since april10-jun10,2017EC
